Description of Public Housing Targeted Population

Public Housing is a governmental agency that provides safe, decent, affordable housing for low-income families, including the elderly and disabled. The targeted population is families whose income does not exceed 50% of the medium income for the county or metropolitan area in which the family chooses to live. HUD publishes the income limits. HUD requires that extremely low-income (ELI) families make up at least 40 percent of the families admitted to public housing during the MHA’s fiscal year. ELI families are those with annual incomes at or below the federal poverty level or 30 percent of the area median income, whichever number is higher. To ensure this requirement is met, the MHA may skip non-ELI families on the waiting list to select an ELI family.
